Derek K. Nielsen's

Dortia Series

Dortia comes from the Greek word doria meaning one from the sea. Nielsen placed a cross in the middle of doria to create a new word of profound signification. The cross embodies the numbers two and four. Take the symbol for one, split it in half then overlap the pieces perpendicular to each other. In essence this is humanity trapped in a split world where everything is in duality. For everything there is an opposite. Take the human body for instance, split into two parts; two arms, two legs, two nostrils, two eyes, etc. There are even two strands of DNA to replicate this body mired in dualism, a body that comes from the sea.
That word sea also has profound meaning. Humans are born from the sea. The amionic fluid’s mineral composition is exactly similar to that of the ocean and the body’s inhabiting spirit came from a vast sea of unseen medium. Much more can be written about this complex symbolism, which will appear on this site as various essays by the author as time marches on.

"Humans are empowered with immense creativity and this series of paintings is designed to augment that in all who see them.
" - Nielsen
